Why Silver Wings?
The name was chosen at an early board meeting, and it was a resident who said it best.
When asked what having a van would mean to her, Anita Penner simply replied: "We are silver, and this is giving us our wings — so we have freedom."
The name stuck. Silver Wings Access Van Inc. (SWAVI) was founded in Swift Current, Saskatchewan in 2021 by a group of community volunteers who believed that residents of the Meadows long term care facility deserved reliable, dignified transportation, on their terms.
We've been working to make that happen ever since.
SWAVI began with an idea and a lot of community spirit. In 2021, we incorporated as a non-profit and began fundraising to purchase a fully accessible van — one that could carry residents of all mobility levels, on evenings, weekends, and even out of town.
Early on, we were supported by the Meadows Auxiliary, who generously issued tax receipts on our behalf while we worked toward our own charity status. In 2023, Silver Wings Access Van Inc. became a fully registered Canadian charity (Charity #74252 7344 RR0002).
Today, we are governed by a volunteer Board of Directors and rely entirely on community generosity to keep the van on the road.
How We Got Here
MEET THE VAN
Our 100% wheelchair-accessible van can carry up to 8 passengers, with space for 4 standard wheelchairs and 4 ambulatory passengers, including those who use walkers. Floor track grids throughout the bay allow flexible seating configurations to suit every rider.
We operate days, evenings, and weekends, including out-of-town trips within a 300 km radius.

SWAVI is run entirely by volunteers. Our Board of Directors brings together community members who are passionate about accessible transportation and quality of life for Meadows residents.
